In Quarantine Zombies we maintain a security checkpoint, control and select survivors, and eliminate the undead. The culmination of our struggles is a murderous raid to the other side of the metropolis.

Released in 2013, Papers, Please demonstrated that security checkpoint simulators have significant potential. Over the years, the formula developed for this production has been utilized in a number of other projects. Quarantine Zombies described here was created by Stones Games studio. It uniquely combines the mentioned idea with FPS mechanics.

Gameplay

In Quarantine Zombies, the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). During the game we take on the role of a battle-hardened soldier fighting a 30-day battle for survival in a Chicago overrun by the living dead. Our responsibilities include not only eliminating these zombies but also rescuing as many survivors as possible. This results in the gameplay unfolding on two levels.

Control of survivors and maintaining the checkpoint

Our primary duty is to control and select the survivors we encounter or who come to us. Although there are healthy individuals among them, many have been bitten by the living dead. To detect the latter in advance, and thus prevent them from leaving the city and causing a global catastrophe, we must meticulously examine each person we encounter using a special body scanner or other tools. Incidentally, we also find contraband on them.

The fate of the survivors is in our hands. It is up to us to decide whether we agree to let a person leave Chicago, subject them to quarantine, or determine that there is no hope for them and eliminate them. Making a decision is complicated by conversations, through which selected NPCs may try to influence our choices.

Fighting zombies

Moreover, as befits a soldier, we are tasked with eliminating hordes of enemies. Initially, we engage in combat near our checkpoint (incidentally, the last one in the northern part of the city), gradually venturing into neighboring infected zones. In this way, we earn money, which we can spend on purchasing new weapons and repairing and upgrading our vehicle.

We will ultimately use our "four wheels" to drive around the city. Upon the arrival of the United States Army, we can begin a raid through the ruined Chicago, driving the car to avoid terrain obstacles, and on foot, searching for resources and fighting zombies. We encounter various types of undead, such as crawlers, spitters, aggressors, and even creatures that were once marine infantry soldiers. We dispose of them using machine guns, shotguns, or pistols.

Story

Quarantine Zombies takes us to Chicago, where a zombie apocalypse has broken out. During the game we take on the role of a soldier responsible for the survival of his checkpoint, waiting for reinforcements from the American army. After receiving support, he must set out to rescue his brother - a scientist working on a cure - whose checkpoint has fallen, and he himself has been surrounded by a horde of the undead.
